ON Culture Guide: Durham Region North
From lake to lake — Scugog to Simcoe — Durham Region North is a rural Ontario destination known for rolling farmlands, charming towns, and the Oak Ridges Moraine, one of the most important formations in Ontario’s greenbelt. All that, plus a vibrant arts and cultural scene.
Creative in Residence
Uju Umenyi’s residency is co-presented with Port Perry’s Theatre on the Ridge to create a new play inspired by the life of Samuel Stout, the first Black resident of Port Perry. Uju will develop and lead workshops focusing on both the theatre creation process and exploring local Black history. Uju will also present a public reading and performance, coupled with an audience feedback session and artist talk.
Creative in Residence
Angela Walcott’s “The People’s Garden” is an Ontario Culture Days 2022 Creatives in Residence project which looks at relationships between farming, food, creativity and community, with the main focus of this project being sustainability and food security. A series of eco-friendly art workshops at Farmer’s markets in the GTA, will introduce participants to elements of textile design (textile imprint design); image transfer and eco painting.
